The Big Story

Chips, churches and China: The best of the Big Story 2022

A look back at some of Nikkei Asia's most memorable cover stories of the year

Nikkei staff writers | China

Nikkei Asia's weekly cover article gets the most real estate online, and in print. Known simply as the "Big Story," it is one of the hardest slots to write for. Features get exponentially harder to write the longer they are -- and at 3,000 to 4,000 words, these particular stories are at the long end of the curve.

Researching and writing a Big Story can sometimes take months. They are usually devoted to a topic that is newsworthy, but a cover story can be relevant even if the subject is not making headlines: coffee, art and animal rights are just a few areas we have covered in 2022, in addition to the usual run of news. Our aim is to excite readers about an issue in Asia they might not yet know existed.
