NEW DELHI -- India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has secured a landslide victory in a local assembly election in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat, results released on Thursday evening show.

The record-breaking win allows the BJP to form a government in the western state for a seventh straight term, providing the party a major boost ahead of the next national election in 2024.
