Japan eyes U.S.-style defense research agency as tech race heats up

TOKYO -- Japan's Ministry of Defense is considering establishing a new research body modeled on a U.S. agency to support civilian technology with military applications.

The ministry looks to launch the agency in fiscal 2024, targeting cutting-edge projects in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and drones.
