Bollywood stars fire up meat substitute market in India

Pandemic provides tailwind for alternatives in a country full of vegetarians

The pandemic has turned Indian consumers more health-conscious, providing a boost to plant-based meat alternatives.

MUMBAI -- India has long had a large share of vegetarians for religious reasons, but the market for plant-based meat alternatives has truly taken off during the pandemic, with Bollywood stars taking to social media to tout their health and environmental benefits.

"I prefer plant-based products because of my vegan ideology of minimizing the suffering of animals, minimizing the impact on our environment, and also for a more healthy diet." an Indian man in his 30s said. He added that he consumes vegan milk and butter, as well as occasional frozen mock meat like nuggets.
