Xi tells U.N. rights chief that China doesn't need lectures

Critics fear probe of Xinjiang forced labor, mass jailing claims will be curbed

SHANGHAI/HONG KONG -- President Xi Jinping on Wednesday told visiting U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet that China doesn't need lectures on how to treat its citizens, after Washington blasted her tour of the country's controversial Xinjiang region as a "mistake."

On Monday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights kicked off a long-awaited tour of the far-western region where rights organizations say at least 1 million people have been imprisoned in internment camps, facing torture and forced labor.
